Ruby on Rails Web Developer - Flexible Contract Position
We are looking for a talented and energetic developer/programmer with
solid database design skills to help build two new Ruby on Rails web
sites on a contract basis. The two web sites are separate projects
based at the University of Texas at Austin but will include many
similar features and functions and present opportunities for code
reuse. One project involves digital video and the other is a web site
that will enable scientists and engineers to share important
technical information. Each project has site plans, detailed
wireframes, and preliminary database designs in place; your job will
be to take primary responsibility for developing the appropriate
models and associated code, refining the database design as necessary.
The ideal candidate will be located close enough to Austin to meet
face-to-face on an occasional basis, but will work from his or her
own location. Together the two projects will entail at least three to
four months of full-time work, but we are open to an applicant who
might want to work at least half-time but less than full-time on
these projects. If things work out on these projects, there will
likely be additional work available beyond the initial contract period.
General Qualifications:
- Strong client-side skills with XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, and AJAX
- Experience with object-oriented programming
- Motivated, detail-oriented self-starter who can meet goals and
demonstrate continuous progress
- Interest in taking an equity position in one project
Specific Skills:
The ideal candidate will have experience with most of the following:
- SQL (preferably using MySQL)
- XHTML/CSS
- JavaScript
- AJAX
- Ruby on Rails
- PHP
- Familiarity with the organization of scientific information
(journals, patents, etc.)
- Familiarity with digital video
Compensation:
This is a contract position. Compensation will be an hourly rate
based on your experience, plus an equity position in one of the
projects. The contract start date is flexible; we prefer a candidate
who could begin work early in 2008.
To Apply:
Please e-mail your resume and a summary of your relevant work (e.g.
links to web sites), including a description of your contribution to
each project, and general salary expectations to geisler at
ischool.utexas.edu
References will be requested from candidates of interest.
